Haida Gwaii Food Strategist

Saahlinda Naay the Haida Gwaii Museum is seeking an All-Islands Food Strategist to develop a plan for increased Haida Gwaii food independence.

ABOUT THE FUTURE OF FOOD ON HAIDA GWAII: Over the next year, a team of food enthusiasts will lead a community engagement process to create “Future of Food on Haida Gwaii—an all-Islands Food Strategy.” This vision of a food independent Haida Gwaii started by seeking wise council; listening to the Elders, youth, knowledge keepers, farmers and processors from all-Island communities. RESPONSIBILITIES
Working with a motivated team, the coordinator will:

  •  understand the history of the project and swiftly take over leadership and coordination for the project plan and strategy
  •  seek wise council from Elders, listening to community members, grocery stores, harvesters, farmers and others from across Haida Gwaii to inform the plan
  •  develop and coordinate a series of effective engagement events and opportunities with all- Islands’ communities
  •  provide collaboration and support to the Hlk’yak’ii program
  •  work with a variety of engagement formats including surveys, discussion groups, interviews, focus groups, workshops, webinars, youth engagement events with COVID-19 protocols in place
  •  synthesize community voices into themes and connections
  •  create, develop, and write an All-Islands food strategy
  •  track activities, write reports/summaries and document findings, including grant-writing and reporting

QUALIFICATIONS
The successful applicant will have experience in and knowledge of Haida values and culture, will have a passion for working with people and be approachable and kind. The applicant will also have:

  •   a passion for the Haida Gwaii food strategy and commitment to its success
  •   an understanding of Haida Gwaii relationships with food, local food systems and solid connections within all Island communities
  •   project coordination experience
  •   experience with community engagement
  •   strong problem-solving and communication skills
  •   strong computer skills and experience with report writing
  •   a valid BC drivers license or independent form of transportation

TIMELINE & NUMERATION
The food strategist is a 10-month term position (with the possibility of extension) that will begin in mid-October. The coordinator will work 25-35 hours per week, wage to commensurate with experience.
