The 2022 Gwaii Haanas Artists-in-Residence are on their way home from Gwaii Haanas – Get ready to meet them as they set up temporary art studios at the Haida Gwaii Museum this week only (June 7-10).
Saulo Giri is an accomplished storyteller originally from Panama, now based in Montréal, Canada.
“For me, storytelling is a tool of social dialogue. It’s important to absorb what surrounds us. Intentions, emotions, questions, doubts, or fears can be transmitted through a story colored by where it came up… I am inspired to create new bridges between landscapes, Haida Gwaii culture and my reality of being an immigrant from Panama [who] has grown up in Québec.”
Jason Goetzinger is a life-long resident of Haida Gwaii, who has practiced in the disciplines of painting, sculpture and jewellery for the last 26 years. Jason’s work focuses mainly on human psychology where he examines what it means to be human, why we do what we do and what impact our behavior has on the world around us.
“My main focus is to create a visual image that evokes thought and emotion within the viewer, who then starts a process of self-reflection and gains a deeper understanding of their own behavior and that of others.”
Danielle Louise Allard currently lives on Haida Gwaii where she is apprenticing with renowned Haida carver Christian White.
“I’ve been inspired by the islands of Haida Gwaii since childhood; the salty air, the mossy grass, and the misty rain have all been prevalent in my art since I picked up my first crayon…This Residency is a way to return to my roots and delve into the home of my ancestors.”
